winter break and base training

I am now home for a full month for winter break. Finals are over, and i survived them. It is the end of a very busy fall semester that I am really glad is over. I am really looking forward to getting into good shape leading up to the collegiate season, and using the season to start with intensity. I have alot of new stuff going on that I am excited about.

First, the cyclocross season is over for me. I decided that I don't want to delay my preparation for the spring and summer months any longer. I was thinking about doing the national cyclocross race in Missouri, but looking at the weather and conditions down there right now, I'm glad i decided not to go. The last thing thing i would want is to injure myself before the big winter I have planned. It was a really fun first CX season, and I think that it helped me alot in my bike handling, and keeping the legs going during the down months. It will also be a great bike to use now that I am home for the frigid and snow-filled Chicago winter.

I am getting a schedule put together for the next months with the help of my coach Jason at VQ. It involves continuing with the weights i have been doing, and alot of base riding hours. It will be really nice for training when I go back to school in January, since the weather will be milder in Virginia. I will be able to get outside more, and use the racing weekends as my intensity. Also my schedule will consist of 4 classes, one of which is online, which means 3 hours of class on Tuesday and Thursday only. Lots of time to get in some big rides. The bad news is that the collegiate national race weekend is the same weekend as my graduation. This really stinks since graduating from college is kind of a big thing, and rumor has it that the racing will be in Colorado this year, which makes it even harder to get out there.

But there is good news. I have been accepted to ride at the
cycling center in Belgium next summer, along with my VQ teammate Luca. It will be a great experience that will involve alot of hard racing and lots of learning. Some of my VT teammates did it last summer, and they had nothing but good things to say about it. We had a dinner last night with Luca and his family, me and my family, along with Jason and Robbie V to discuss the opportunity and details of the preparation before we go there. I think this is a really good step in the direction that I hope to go in this sport, and will definitely be a good stepping stone to really find out about myself, and about the sport.

I will also continue to race for VQ when i return, alongside Luca and Dave Sachs, and even other VQ coaches, to round out what I think will be a great elite team that will hopefully turn some heads.
